Tilorien Monastery has now opened in the Belgian Ardennes!
The humble beginnings of Tilorien Monastery have now started in the Belgian Ardennes. The Sangha is living in very basic conditions, in a tree house and a tent in a kind supporter’s garden.
Thanks to one of our donors, Ayya Kathrin and Ayya Vimala have created a website for the new Monastery: tilorien.org.
We hope to be able to build a monastery building with facilities for lay visitors and a meditation room. In the mean time, you can support the nuns in various ways and if you want to come and meet us for the day, you are always welcome. Please contact us in advance.
New Book: The Revolutionary Life of Freda Bedi
by Vicki Mackenzie
Shambhala Review:
Freda Bedi was the first Western woman to become a Tibetan Buddhist nun—but that pioneering ordination was really just one in a life full of revolutionary acts. Freda Bedi (1911–1977) broke the rules of gender, race, and religion—in many cases before it was thought that the rules were ready to be challenged. She was at various times a force in the struggle for Indian independence, spiritual seeker, scholar, professor, journalist, author, social worker, wife, and mother of four children. She counted among her friends, colleagues, and teachers Mohandas Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi, the Dalai Lama, Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche, and many others. She was a woman of spiritual focus and compassion who was also not without contradictions. Vicki Mackenzie gives a nuanced view of Bedi and of the forces that shaped and motivated this complex and compelling figure. More>>

Meditation on the Elements – Retreat with Ayya Sobhana
DATE: March 25 – 30, 2017
This meditation retreat will be based on the inspiring Buddhist text, “The Exposition of the Elements” (Middle Length Discourses 140). We will begin by tuning into the six sense bases, and then direct our attention to the four physical elements as universal qualities, seeing the earthiness of the bones as no different than a tree, the wetness of tears no different than a river, the fire of digestion no different than a wild fire, the airy aspect of breath no different than the wind. By softening the perception of individuality in the physical body, this meditation makes space for a refined and pure consciousness to arise. We will attend to our feeling response to the impermanence in our external world due to climate change, aiming for patience, courage, equanimity and insight to face all difficulties.
