Support for Building a New Stupa at the Carolina Buddhist Vihara

From Carolina Buddhist Vihara’s website:

Ayya Sudinna has a vision for the backyard at the Vihara.

This vision is centered around a new Stupa and would be a place where we can sit on benches, meditate, pay homage to the Buddha, Dhamma and Sangha and/or make offerings to our dearly departed. One of the Vihara’s co-founders has completed research and found that we can have an authentic Stupa from Sri Lanka fabricated, shipped and installed at the Vihara for approximately $10,000.

Project: Building Projects at Santi Forest Monastery

Santi Forest Monastery, a Buddhist Nuns’ hermitage, is set in the rugged bush ravines of the Southern Highlands of New South Wales, Australia. They are in need of financial support for the following projects:

  • Landscaping the paths and area around the Chetiya (Stupa), in back garden.
Due to ongoing deterioration from storm-water erosion we need to assess, design and execute some more stable paths here. We intend to first consult a landscape architect on the situation so as we can find a permanent yet aesthetically congruent solution for this beautiful area of the monastery garden.
  • Kuti (meditation hut) upgrading
We are slowly working on upgrading/rebuilding some kutis, some of which are quite run-down. The idea is to make them more thermally efficient and create ease of maintenance.
  • General building maintenance and repairs
  • Property maintenance

In addition, we have a report that repair of roads could total about $41,000.

Update from Ayya Jitindriya

We were fortunate not to lose any buildings at Santi, however, the property is quite a mess to sort through! About 90% of the 150 acres was burned through (back burning), so there are many fallen trees over roads and paths. Then, the flooding rains came right on the heal of the fires… They thankfully put the fires out, but also caused a fair bit of storm-water damage to the roads and paths, particularly in places where storm-water culverts had melted in the fire or had been blocked by burnt fallen tress and branches. So a bit of mess to clean up gradually, but we hope to get some govt. grant help with the fire related damage costs at least. Unfortunately roads are expensive to repair with heavy machinery involved: the first quote to come in is $41,000!

Project:  Help for Karuna Sevena (Ven. Visuddhi)

Location:  Karuna Sevena, Prostějov, Czech Republic

Ārāma Karuṇā Sevena is a monastic dwelling in the Czech Republic, founded in May 2009 by Venerable Bhikkhunī Visuddhi therī. Thanks to the generous support of a dedicated group of practitioners and donors, the construction works began in stages and the ārāma underwent an extensive renovation in 2016 when the main meditation hall was built.

The repair of the roof at Viveka (the house for visitor accommodation) had been a priority for some time. It has now been completed!

A new goal is to convert the attic space to rooms or sections for accommodating and increasing room for visitors.

Additionally, Karuṇā Sevena is also in need of general donations and support in order to provide for the requisite needs of Ayya Visuddhi.

Project: Development of Mahāpajāpati Monastery.

Location: Pioneertown, CA

A large construction project at Mahapajapati monastery has recently finished! The work produced a new meditation facility which can accommodate 35 yogis. However, more funds are needed to complete a covered walking area, badly needed because of the rustic environment and windy climate.

Project: Anukampa Bhikkhuni Residence, Oxford, UK

Dhamma friends at Anukampa Residence, Oxford
Dhamma friends at Anukampa Residence, Oxford

Location: Oxford, UK

Anukampa Bhikkuni Project was founded by Venerable Canda, with Ajahn Brahm as Spiritual Advisor, in early 2016, to create a Bhikkhuni presence in the UK.

Already, thanks to a dedicated group of supporters and practitioners, a rented property in Oxford, England, has been secured temporarily to accommodate Venerable Canda and host regular guests whilst the project develops. Venerable Canda has been building a Bhikkhuni presence in the UK by teaching far and wide.

Once enough funds have been raised and the team on the ground grows in size, Anukampa will purchase a permanent residence and begin to create a Forest Monastery for Bhikkhunis – the very first of its kind in the UK.

This monastery will be a place for Bhikkhunis to live and to train, as well as for guests of every race, gender and sexual orientation to practice integrating meditation and service. Together and with your support, we hope to create a welcoming and harmonious community dedicated to Awakening.

Project: Reconstruction of bhikkhunis’ monastic lodgings and meditation hall

Location: Sri Lanka

Meditation Hall

Padukka Mathika Matha Bhikkhuni Aramaya in Sri Lanka was built fifty years ago and is now quite dilapidated.  Bhikkuni H. Supeshala, one of the winners of the 2006 United Nations Award for Outstanding Women in Buddhism in Southeast Asia, has requested much needed assistance.

There have been donations totally $400 in 2017. Donations totaled $3,250 during 2016. Additional funding is needed. In Dec, 2017 she wrote:

I appreciate and thank you, The Bhikkuni Alliance, for your kind contributions sent towards the progress of our ‘Marthika Martha Aramaya’ in Sri Lanka the past few years. The ground floor of the Bhikkuni residence is completed. The roof work is also fully completed. A meditation retreat programe for the coming New Year has been given thought to. We conduct one day meditation in the old building. The roof being rather low it is far too hot inside to conduct a meditation retreat for many days. Our concern is focussed on this now. I extend my gratitude to the Bhikkuni Alliance for all the help given to the ‘Aramaya ‘ A BIG THANK YOU.
